Look, I tried. Harris wanted to go the more pragmatic route. Obviously scanning the whole ship before boarding is a better idea. But when you have three different people with what appears to be three separate agendas, protocol is often the first thing to slip. Plus it would be way more boring to watch our heroes sit and wait for Chen to let them know what the scans turned up.
If it wasn’t risky it wouldn’t be nearly as interesting.
Safety in Space??? Pffff.
